The Jersey Court Condominiums are an excellent example of the Spanish Mission Style architecture. This should not be confused with the Spanish Colonial Revival Style that is represented by 218 Second Avenue, which is nearing the completion of its restoration. This structure was built in 1924 and was one of the first apartment buildings constructed in Asbury Park, N.J. In addition to its authentic architecture, this building was unique in its apartment configuration. All of the apartments were efficiency units without separate bedrooms. The living rooms each contained a "Murphy Bed" that hid behind rotating French glass doors. These apartments were often called "Honeymoon" apartments because their small size and low rent appealed to couples starting out in their new lives. They also served the housing needs of lower paid workers, such as hotel staff and amusement operators. It is fortunate that the exterior and interior are in remarkably original condition. We intend to reconstruct missing tile-roofing and all other elements necessary to bring this building back to its former splendor. We have enlisted the services of M/G Architects of Manhattan to assist in the restoration. The restorative process that will bring the Jersey Court back to life will renew its historic past and prepare it for the next 80 years. The layout of the apartments will be revised to accommodate modern lifestyles.
