The Restorative Process

Prior to undertaking the restoration of the Jersey Court Apartments, the development team decided to follow the United States Department of Interior National Parks Service Historic Preservation Office guidelines in order to have this building entered on the National Registry of Historic Places. In order to do so, we had to provide for voluminous amounts of historic documentation as well as structural and aesthetic information. Once this was provided, we received directives guiding us in the restorative process from the National Parks Service.

In order to bring this building back to its former glory, all deteriorated surfaces, both inside and out, have to be removed. The exterior has to be refinished with material identical to the original. The interior dimensions of the apartments have to be maintained, and most importantly, as much as the original detail that currently exists has to be restored. During this restoration process, the State of New Jersey's Historic Preservation Office monitors the ongoing process for compliance. When this building is complete, it will be just a beautiful as it was at the original ribbon-cutting ceremony - only better. Instead of coal fire steam heat, every apartment will have individual gas hot air heat and central air conditioning. Instead of a cast iron sink on legs, you will have maple wood cabinets with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances.

The most significant part of the restoration of Jersey Court Apartments is what you do not see. Although a great effort will be put into making this building aesthetically pleasing, even more work will be done behind the walls. Since it is our intention to make this building last another 80 years, all mechanical systems will be removed. This building will feature all new plumbing mechanicals, as well as electric service, and communication lines. A modern security system will allow verbal communication with visitors waiting for entry at the front door. You will also be able to turn on your television and view the party prior to their entry. It will be reassuring to know that all common areas will be monitored by time-lapse video surveillance.

As Millie says on Broadway every night, "Everything today is thoroughly modern."
